Bergen, Passaic Schools Seek Sustainability Certification
RIDGEWOOD, N.J. -- Sustainable Jersey announced this week that 400 schools have registered for the Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification program.
At the school district level, 155 districts have also passed a resolution to participate in the program. "Sustainable Jersey for Schools is a certification program for New Jersey public schools that want to go green, conserve resources and take steps to create a brighter future, one school at a time," according to a news release.

Michael J. Burke, 85, Dumont Resident
DUMONT, N.J. -- Michael J. Burke, of Dumont, died on Wednesday, Feb. 17. He was 85.
Born in Ireland, Burke immigrated to Queens in 1957, raised his family in Long Island and eventually settled in Dumont in 1988. He was employed at PSEG, in Long Island, and was also a member of the Bergen Irish Association.
Burke is survived by his wife, Margaret (Buckley) Burke; children Michael and Mary Ann; and siblings Patrick and Bridie. He was predeceased by his parents, Anne (Mullin) and Patrick Burke, and siblings Richard, Bill, Ann and Mary.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Mary Carlson, of Fairfield, died on Thursday, Feb. 18. She was 92.
Born in Bridgeport, Carlson retired from the Southern New England Telephone Company, where she was an operator. She also retired from Roosevelt School and the Skane School, where she worked as a teacher's aide.

Born in Italy, Chiella is survived by her daughter, Lauri Chiella and her husband Dennis Dziezanowski; many nieces and nephews; and extended family and friends.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Jerry Pezzella, of Bridgeport, died on Monday, Feb. 8. He was 80.

NORWALK, Conn. -- Norwalk resident Elaine H. Cotaling died on Thursday, Feb. 18. She was 79.
Born in Norwalk, Cotaling graduated from Sacred Heart Academy and St. Raphael School of Nursing, in New Haven. She and her husband started Cotaling's Auto Body in 1970.
She loved winter weekends in Wilmington, Vermont, with her family.
